FIFO (First In, First Out) racks are a type of storage system used primarily in warehouses, distribution centers, and retail settings to ensure that inventory is managed efficiently. The FIFO system operates under the principle that the first items that are placed into the storage system should be the first items to be taken out, ensuring that older stock is used or sold before newer stock. This approach is particularly important for businesses that deal with perishable goods or products with expiration dates, such as food, pharmaceuticals, or electronics.

1. Design and Structure:

   • Gravity Flow System: FIFO racks typically use a gravity flow system, where products are loaded from the rear and then move forward by gravity to the front of the rack. This ensures that the first items placed in the system (the oldest) are the first ones to be picked up and removed.
   • Inclined Tracks: The storage shelves in FIFO racks are designed with inclined lanes or roller tracks, which are tilted slightly to allow for the free movement of items from the back to the front. These inclined tracks are usually made from steel or plastic rollers that help move goods forward as new stock is added.
   • Shelves and Dividers: FIFO racks often have shelves with adjustable dividers to accommodate various product sizes and types. Dividers ensure that products remain organized and properly spaced as they flow down the rack.
   • Front Barriers: To prevent the products from rolling out of the rack when they are picked, FIFO racks often feature front barriers or push-back systems that hold the items in place and allow easy access from the front of the rack.

2. Materials:

   • FIFO racks are typically made from durable materials such as steel, aluminum, or heavy-duty plastic, which are designed to support the weight of the products being stored while maintaining stability.
   • Some FIFO racks are also coated to prevent corrosion, especially when they are used in environments where moisture is present, such as in cold storage or food handling areas.

3. Functionality:

   • The primary function of FIFO racks is to ensure that inventory is rotated automatically, so that older products are used or sold before newer stock. This minimizes the risk of stock expiring or becoming obsolete.
   • The system allows for easy access to products stored at the front, while the rear-facing position ensures that newer stock is added at the back. This creates an efficient flow of goods from the back to the front without requiring manual rotation.
   • FIFO racks are ideal for managing items with expiration dates, seasonal products, or items that need to be handled in a time-sensitive manner.
